Exercising prevents extra sizes in children.

I never once went out of my way to actively exercise my body until I joined the military and I realized how unhealthy my body was at the time. Now I lift weights, run regularly, and practice healthy eating habits to maintain my body’s health. Nutrition and exercise are the two main lectures that I preach to my children to practice everyday because growing up I didn’t necessarily eat healthy or understand that sport and recreation was important for my body’s development. Swimming and teaching nutritional values are two ideas that my family is focusing  on practicing so we can all have a happier and healthier life. 149-children-running-600x400

Cross Platform Critique

Chicago Tribune (Newspaper)

For Pearl Harbor dead, a final rest,” by Ted Gregory.il_ct

Content quality: The sources used for this timely article about the Pearl Harbor attack were substantial and appropriate. Sources interviewed included past servicemen, family members of the deceased, and professional scientists from the DNA laboratory. The reporting was very clear and comprehensive, ethical and well-balanced. Important questions were answered in the article and information was clearly conveyed. Readers were served well with an informative and timely story on Pearl Harbor.

Editing issues: I would rewrite the last sentence in the second paragraph because I was confused and had to reread the sentence a couple times. No other errors or grammatical issues were found and no need to change the structure or approach of the story. Continue reading

Video games help children level-up in real life

Video games have been a part of my life for as far back as I can remember, starting with the original Nintendo and Super Mario Bros. to the current Playstation 4 and a mobile game on my iPhone called Clash of Clans.  I’ve never once thought about the negative or positive effects of playing video games until my two boys were old enough to start wanting to play them. The thought very first came to me when my oldest son came home from kindergarten and proceeded to tell me how he played games on an iPad, which in reality he was learning math, how to read, and science concepts all from a technological device. Video games were once thought to be detrimental to a young person’s development that caused violent tendencies and low scores at school, but that ideology is slowly evolving now that there are more studies showing positive effects from playing video games. www-usnews

Streaming is the new babysitter

I will be the first to admit that I use the streaming services Netflix and Hulu to entertain my children while I focus on other tasks and obligations. Netflix, Hulu, and other streaming services are useful for parents because they contain children’s television shows and movies for their kids to enjoy and learn. There are a wide variety of children’s shows and movies to select from with some content being positive and the other negative, so it’s important to me to be able to recognize the content that influences my children in a negative manner. I don’t just let my kids pick whatever they want to watch because that content might corrupt their behavior and attitudes in society. For example, I no longer let them watch Power Rangers because I noticed an increase in violent actions like fighting and screaming, which are behaviors that I do not condone.

No show or movie is perfect, but there are certainly better options to choose among than others. I can definitely say that I edit what my children are able to view. The shows and movies that they watch must be educational, have a good moral story, and be fair in treatment of gender, race, and ethnicity. The following shows and movies have been analyzed with a critical lens by myself and are the current shows that I’m letting my kids consume.streaming-services-e1423763468741-590x295 Continue reading

Children’s Entertainment

As a father to six and four year-old boys I’ve learned that it is quite easy to entertain them by streaming children’s shows or movies. The shows and movies that they watch are monitored closely by myself and judged according to educational content, a positive moral narrative, and equal treatment of gender, race, and ethnicity (culture). The boys do have a strict time limit of watching television at one to two hours a day or none at all depending on their behavior. Finding alternative methods of entertainment for my children can be a challenge at times; however, we as a family always come up with entertaining activities for the children that also keep the parent involved.

This blog site will critically review children’s shows on streaming services such as Hulu and Netflix while also providing and critiquing other forms of children’s entertainment for the whole family. It is important to me and to many other parents in the world to positively entertain our children with content that will help them grow into competent adults. 12393236_f520
